Questionnaire
A detailed questionnaire was prepared by an expert committee comprising highly qualified academicians. Drawing on their combined experience, the questionnaire was designed to elicit an extensive range of information to assess each institution on various criteria and facilities offered to students. Criteria such as accreditation, infrastructure, quality of faculty, academic performance of students, preference of students for the institution, placement and co-curricular activities were taken into consideration.

Polled population
Eighty five engineering colleges operating in Kerala were contacted and the questionnaire was distributed to them. Of the 33 colleges in the government owned and government-aided group, 16 responded to our survey. Among the 52 self financing colleges, 26 responded for a total count of 42 responses out of 85 colleges polled.
Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), Amritha Institute of Technology & Science and National Institute of Technology, Calicut (NITC) being either deemed universities or autonomous institutions, were excluded from the survey.
Data analysis
Analysis of self reported data from 42 engineering colleges was conducted by a three member jury with Dr. A. Sridharan as the chairman. Out of these 39 colleges were graded as Outstanding, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Very Fair, Fair and Satisfactory depending on their respective marks out of a maximum of 1000.
